Long road Padang Maninjau

Start a DAY without stop saying.. BEAUTIFUL!

After exhausted conference. Thank's to Tatha, Rio (bombye), Kahlil, to arrange REALLY GREAT trip for UP delegates. 6 am. I was being picked up by Kahlil from the venue. Honestly It's so tired coz' I slept in 4.00 in the morning to chat with Edja and Irma. Owww... SO FUCKING TIRED! hahaha..
I arrived in Bombye house then I took a bath after full three days I didn't take a bath! hahah... Fiuh I also borrowed Imed T-SHIRT since no clean t-shirt in ma bag. Bombye threated us as special guests. He threated us for our breakfast "LONTONG KARI PADANG" so nice meal. Then we start our JOURNEY!! Woow.. so exited.

"PARADISE" BEACH

I sat at the front, next to Khalil as our driver of the day, then we just picked girls UP delegates in one of gas station, coz' they lived in Mira's house. After we fill the car and we got ready for our trip.
The OC brought us to beautiful beach, quite far, around 30 minutes from gas station and in the way there we saw many beautiful scenaries.. fresh air, sounds of waves, and many coral mountains, friends laughs, chat each others, heat of our body and wind blew touch our faces when we open car' windows... feel the nature taste. Great feelin' to be remembered.

Yeahh... we arrive on the beach!! wooowww... we found many new things that we can't see in our city. Traditional ship, three cute dogs, and cows. I just chat with some members about our Taiwanese friends that really want to introduce us to her country lives. I thought this one is more "VILLAGERS" than taiwanese talked about. Hahaaa.. and also the members agree with me. We took so many photos and felt the sea water on our feet, jumped on the smooth sand, collect many coral and unexpectedly we got "KUMANG", Sea animals. SO cute.... after we engage with sea atmosphere then we continued our trip to lembah anai..

LEMBAH ANAI
I decided to sat at the back, coz' I felt soooo sleepy. I just know Karin and David found the kumangs and play with them took the photo. But I think they have already in HEAVEN now. It's so cute with their "WHITE HOUSE" hahaha... SO TIRED then I just go sleep without nobody know me sleep. After they noticed that I got slept at the back, they took my photo! Lembah Anai quite far, I think 35-40 minutes from the beach and I don't know nothing until somebody made me woke up and we just arrived in Lembah Anai.

I didn't have any idea about Lembah Anai and what it will be looked like. I just know it as beautiful place and one of Padang Landmark. Hmmm.. I just walked with all members without bring anything. Ohh.. from far away we met other AIESECers from other LC that join post tour with other OCs. Hohoho... HI AIESECCCC!!!!
After shaked their hand, I felt their body so fresh. Still don't know why.... Then After I saw the ANAI with my own eyes... then I know the answer. The Lembah ANAI is waterfall near the street we can reach it and get into it. SO FRESHFULL. We roll our pants and put our feet in to the water. Hiii... the water so cold and fresh.. I thought to swim but I didn't bring any clothes (I'll do it next time! I promise to my self)

LUNCH TIME!!
DUDUDU... I thought Padang food will be expensive and hot again, but this time I met really GREAT CUCO PADANG food in our way to Maninjau! Hardly explain I ate ayam pop, jengkol, and daun singkong! hahah.. COOL! But After that I went to bathroom for ***. hahah....
In the end we just pay around $2/person. So cheap. I saw this restaurant had ever been visited by our President Yudoyono and also has several achievements. Ckckck... We love you LO we do!!!

MANINJAU
We got lost from restaurant to the Maninjau... I don't know why Kahlil can get lost. But finally we can find Maninjau without find other cars (we are separated in two cars). Kahlil and all members decided to stop in WARUNG. Eihh.. we saw there's a monkey and three dogs. I thought the monkey so cute and also I can touch it. Everybody touch and hug it. After 5 minutes the monkey became stressful and bite me. fufu... luckily I wore jacket. DAMMIT!
We were trying to contact people in other car but we can't get any signal. Luckily somebody was called by Tatha and they told us to get closer to Maninjau. Great SCENARY and it's like HEAVEN!!!!! We order coffee in the bar and also hot milk! we drank and chit chat with Mira and Kahlil also Bombye about HOW BEAUTIFUL PADANG IS!
Then as usually WILLY, TATHA, IMED always act as sexy couples... wondering they are in their honey moon...

BUKIT TINGGI

We arrive in Bukit tinggi at 5.30, one of leisure place in Sumatra. It's great city with JAM GADANG as its landmark. I think it's unique coz' it was built in 18th century and has been renovated three times. The uniqueness from this landmark that the number 4 in its clock is different romans, it's not used IV but IIII. We also met again with many AIESECers here and shout HI AIESEC loudly from inside of car. Then many people see us as annoying stranger. hahaha... After we bought some souvenirs and I bought shirt to change coz' I have no more, we continue the journey that we CALLED, "TURN TO THE RIGHT, AND STRAIT!" we will arrived then in PAYAKUMBUH! AH! The Willie's family was waiting for us for DURIAN PARTY for willie' durian tree back side of his house in his lovely HOMETOWN!

A. LOCATION

  • North Sumatra Province, Indonesia.
  • 2:21-2:56N, 98:26-99:15E; 905 m above sea level.

B. DESCRIPTION

Lake Toba lies in the northern part of Barisan Mountain Range, which is volcanic and traverses Sumatra Island from northwest to southeast as its backbone.
The laketrough is surrounded by precipitous cliffs 400-1,200 m high. Based on the topographic feature and the wide distribution of volcanic ejecta around the lake, some geologists and valcanologists have considered it to be a giant caldera or cauldron.

The water surface of L. Toba is 905 m above sea level and about 1,100 km2 wide. The total area of the lake, including the areas of Samosir and Paradapur Islands, amounts to 1,780 km2. The mountains around the lake are called Batak Highlands. The only draining river from L. Toba, the Asahan, flows southeastwards dissecting the gentle slopes of the pyroclastic plateau.

Paradise in Lembah Baliem Fest: Papua, Indonesia

Every year since 1991, the Jayawijaya Regency administration organizes the Lembah Baliem Cultural Festival ahead of the Aug. 17 Independence Day celebrations.

This year, the festival from Aug. 9-11 displayed traditional cultural attractions performed by tribes living in Lembah Baliem (Baliem Valley), Papua province.

Inspired by their “traditional wars” that were frequently conducted to become a custom among Papua’s indigenous tribes, the festival presented the stylized “war” as a main attraction for tourists in the area.

lembah.jpg

In the past, tribal wars were believed triggered by fights among youths, theft and abductions of women.

Wearing traditional clothes and carrying arrows and spears, dozens of tribesmen participated in the “war” in the festival. Although it was a performance, the men employed traditional strategy and stalked their “enemy” as in a tribal war.

Besides the “war”, tourists could also watch the pig race, in which owners race first and are then followed by their trotting pet pigs.

Most of the owners are women, because they are believed to be more caring toward the animals.

Pigs are often a prestigious part of dowries in a traditional Papuan wedding. In addition, wealth and status in tribal societies are measured by the number of pigs they own.

Playing pinkon, a traditional bamboo trumpet, is another attraction of the festival.

Apart from enjoying the performances of the festival, which involved thousands of tribespeople as participants and attendees, tourists used the occasion for observing the daily life of Papuan tribal culture. Most of tribesmen wore only a koteka, a penis sheath made from a gourd, and tribeswomen wore sali, or grass skirts, and were topless according to traditional dress.

Several tourists opted for a hands-on experience, participating in the archery and spear-throwing competitions.

Cool Summer Treat Brownies

Brownies with milk

Forth Of July Brownies

We suggest this way of serving brownies for a party or special event because it is simple, but at the same time more eye appealing than a normal brownie. The whip-cream adds the perfect touch to a brownie, and glass of milk is always the perfect drink to go with any chocolate dessert.

Brownies with Tea

Brownies for a tea party

Brownies are one of the best chocolate desserts to go with tea and will help you settle your chocolate craving. I suggest cutting the brownies in smaller servings to make them more elegant to go with your tea. Tea can complements your brownies just like milk.

Unbelievable at Bunaken National Marine Park

Bunaken is one of Indonesia's most famous dive/snorkeling areas, and it draws scuba divers & snorkelers from all over the world. In addition to Bunaken itself, a rather featureless banana-shaped island, the National Park includes the neighboring islands of Manado Tua, a distinctive cone-shaped extinct volcano, Siladen, Montehagen, Nain, and Nain Kecil

Landscape

The mangrovial east coast of Bunaken

The mangrovial east coast of Bunaken

The park is famed for the clarity of its water (35m visibility is common in the summer dry season), the abundance of coral and fish, and for the precipitous "walls" at some sites. Bunaken Timur, right off the east coast of the island and featuring all of the above, is according to some the best dive site in all Indonesia.

Flora and fauna

Except for the very largest pelagics, nearly everything can be found at Bunaken. Reef inhabitants include white and black tip reef sharks, giant sea turtles, napoleon fish, and dugongs.

You may frequently run into dolphins, and occasionally schools of whales.

Climate

Bunaken is barely a degree above the equator and thus tropical. The "Rainy Season" from November to mid April, brings frequent rains, sometimes in storms lasting for several days, which make the air nice and cool but also reduce visibility. The "Dry Season" from May to October, when temperatures climb to 35° and visibility reaches a maximum. Bunaken receives far less rain than the mainland and is well ventilated with sea breezes.

Get in

Bunaken is about 45-60 minutes by boat from Manado. Most resorts will arrange transfers from the airport for their guests. Alternatively, a public boat leaves daily except Sunday at 2-3PM from the canal on the north side of the market. The cost is 25,000Rp for tourists (7,000Rp for locals). It returns to Manado from the jetty in Bunaken village around 8-8:30AM every morning except Sunday. You can also charter a boat both ways at anytime.

Fees/Permits

As of September 2008, entry to the park costs either Rp 50,000/day or Rp 150,000/Calendar year. Even though the fee does not seem to be automatically levied upon entrance to the island, it is the responsibility of all visitors to the Park to have one, and most reputable dive shops will supply them. As proof of payment, you will receive a plastic tag that must be carried at all times — it's waterproof and can be attached to your diving gear.

Get around

Muddy paths connect the various settlements around the Bunaken. Many are effectively impassable after rain. Watch out if walking along the coastline, as the beach may disappear when the high tide rolls in.

See

Tourism on Bunaken has been very much geared towards divers over the years, but the trend seems to be changing and more and more snorkelers are visiting the area as too are those who wish to just relax immersed in nature...away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Possible activities for landlubbers include:

  • Beach-combing, especially at low tide when the reef top is accessible
  • Hiking to some of the secluded coves on the Eastern and Northern part of the island, but trails are poorly marked
  • Fishing, but only outside of the park boundaries: hire a boat or join one of the local fishing boats.
  • Dolphin & Whale watching, either while on diving or snorkeling boat trips or by hiring a boat.

Do

The thing to do in Bunaken is dive, dive and dive! However, the steep walls and occasionally strong, rapidly changing currents mean that many sites cater more to the intermediate/advanced diver, although there are beginner-friendly sites too and all dive shops can arrange intro dives and Open Water Diver courses. The North Sulawesi Watersports Association offers oodles of detail on diving in the park. The park also offers outstanding snorkeling!

All dive shops in the park are affiliated with resorts, so see Sleep below for listings.

The snorkeling is fantastic just in front of many of the resorts that surround the island, with an incredible amount of marine life living in the shallows and also on the outer walls. Remember not to snorkel without fins as the currents can sometimes be strong, and change quickly even when they are not. Pick a reference point on the island and do not stray too far unless you are a confident swimmer.

Buy

At the "Visitors Center" on Liang beach locals sell handicrafts, T Shirts and general souvenirs

Eat

Fish, fish and fish -- usually at your dive resort.

Drink

Natural drinking water is Not available on Bunaken. Insist on bottled mineral water at all times, ensure that coffees or teas are made using bottled water also. Local spirits Cap Tikus literally "rat brand" made from distilled palm wine (a type of moonshine), actually quite nice "on the rocks with a slice of lemon".

Sleep

Most people choose to sleep at their dive resorts, almost all of which offer full board and attractive package offers. Those on the south and west sides of Bunaken have a strip of beach (coarse yellow sand), while the east side has a mixture of mangroves and small beaches with better reefs.

Treasure in Tana Toraja Indonesia

Bizarrely shaped Sulawesi has four arms of land sticking out into the sea, creating magnificent stretches of coastline and tranquil bays.

The most interesting area, Tana Toraja, is a mystical region of rolling hills, rice paddies and country roads that lead past ornate homes and pretty villages.

The Toraja people have an extraordinary culture centered on the belief of tribal gods. Ceremonies and feasts are held throughout the year, the most important being for a funeral. The Toraja believe that without an elaborate funeral, the sprit of the deceased will remain on earth to haunt the living. Funerals can therefore last days, and include a ritual slaughter of buffalo, followed by a grand feast. Tourists are usually invited to watch the goings-on! You may also witness buffalo fighting and a game called sisemba (similar to Thai boxing).

Nearby Mamasa Valley is a great place for trekking and village walks.

By plane
The only airport in Tana Toraja is in Rantepao, which was closed for several years for upgrading. The airport reopened in late 2005 and Dirgantara Air Service (DAS) now operates flights three times weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, departing from Makassar at 10 AM (30 min, Rp. 250,000 one way). Note that the tiny airport can only handle turboprops and has no navigation gear, so flights are often delayed or cancelled in bad weather.

By bus
Tana Toraja is a solid 300-km, 8-10 hour drive from Makassar. The cost is 80,000 Rupiah on an air-conditioned bus from Makassar to Rantepao. There is usually a morning or an overnight bus. Frequent mikrolets/bemos leave from Makassar to the bus terminal and take about 40 minutes.

By taxi or charted vehicle
A chartered car usually costs about 700,000 Rupiah one-way from Makassar. It is possible to find one for a few hundred thousand less if you can coordinate with someone who is driving in that direction. If you plan on staying for a few days and would like the return trip as well, a driver with car should cost about 400,000 Rupiah per day.

A trip to the extraordinary Bukittinggi Indonesia

Another 3-month period brings another short trip to renew my Malaysian visa. This time, we went to Indonesia. Destination: Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. As soon as we stepped on the ferry going from Melaka to Dumai, I could feel it coming. The lady sitting next to us took us under her wing and explained everything there is to know about Indonesian visas and immigration. Travellers from most of the Western countries most pay for a visa upon arrival. 1-3 days=10$US, 4-30 days=25$US. Her son comfortably settled on my boyfriend’s laps to sleep while she fed us non-stop on corn chips garnished with peanuts and dry fish. At the immigration counter, the head officer calls me and keeps me in his office…just to chat (more or less openly trying to pick me up!). We finally leave shaking hands and promising to stop by when we return. It really seems that development hasn’t reach Sumatra yet. From East to West Sumatra, the only road is so narrow trucks often have to pull aside to let other vehicles pass. The road is the most badly maintained I have ever seen: full of holes and bumps. The last miles before entering the small mountain town of Bukittinggi are done on a dirt track!

Favourite spots:
Bukit Tinggi means High Mountain in Malay/Indonesian. And the mountains are wonderful! Extincted volcanoes and canyons compose the picture of Bukittinggi’s surroundings. The city itself is really cute and a walking tour is the best way to admire the local architecture and beautiful gardens and lanscaping arrangements. In Panorama Park, a visit to Japanese Cave is a must. During the Second World War, the Japanese forced Indonesians, mainly from Java and Sulawesi, to dig tunnels and chambers so they could hide weapons. Of the 5 kilometers of tunnels that were discovered, 1.5 is accessible for tourists. It is a bit scary when you think that several hundreds of Indonesian slaves died digging this hole!

What’s really great:
But it isn’t so much the view that captivated us, but the people. Everywhere we went, Indonesians, old and young were ready to tell fascinating stories about their town, to show us around, to offer us a drink! We ended up promising to come back to at least a dozen of persons. I realize now how difficult it is to keep this promise when travelling.

Sights:
Please avoid the Zoo.
Head to Pasar Atas for cheap clothes, local snacks (they are addictive) and other bandar kecil (little things).
Trekking around the canyon and volcanos is also very popular!

Accommodations:
It worth paying a bit more for a hotel room. Guest Houses are not very clean!

Restaurants:
For the friendliness of the staff, 5 stars go to The Apache Cafe and The Rendez-Vous Cafe!
